A deluge of rain has brought flash flooding across many parts of the East, Ohio Valley, and Southeast, and the heavy rains will continue on Tuesday, while more snow out West and a high fire risk in the four corners states; plus, today’s forecast.
May 2020 is on track to become the wettest on record for the third year in a row. Tropical storm Arthur is moving away from the East Coast but a slow-moving system has brought heavy rain and flash flooding from the Great Lakes to the southeast.
Widespread flood alerts are in effect across the Midwest and into parts of the Ohio Valley. Chicago has seen 20 percent of its annual rainfall in a matter of a couple of days. A Lakeshore flood warning is in effect for Lake Erie.
In the South, there is potential flooding in portions of Western North Carolina into parts of the Tennessee Valley.
Parts of the western US, Northwest and northern Rockies will also see showers today in California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Western North Dakota, and northern Utah. There will also be some shower activity in eastern Colorado, South Eastern Wyoming and Western Nebraska.
Portions of the upper Midwest and Ohio Valley will see rainfall, particularly in Minnesota which will see 4+ inches of rain, while portions of Wisconsin and Illinois will see between 2-4 inches of rain.
In elevations above 7000 feet in the high Sierra, more snow is expected, as much as twelve inches.
A critical fire weather warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) across the four corners states due to strong winds and above-average temperatures much of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Eastern Colorado, and the deserts of southeastern California and southeastern Nevada.
The areas with the highest risk are Eastern Utah, Western Colorado around the Utah border, Eastern Arizona, and Western New Mexico extending into the central area of the state including Albuquerque.
